Rutherford’s buildings recapture the spirit of a family home or business, or preserve in a small way a property whose fate was a wrecking ball. Dodging bulldozers, he even measured the landmark Civic Theater in west Wichita and the Second Empire grain mill in Hays, Kansas, as they were being destroyed.
The architectural works have been rendered in scales ranging from 1/4 inch to the foot to the popular 1/2 inch to the foot with some of the larger works featuring interiors. Rutherford uses information at hand to create his sculptures, working from photography, measurements and architectural drawings.
